Assemblyman for Padmore Electoral Area has repaired broken streetlights across the community
Charles Amos, the Assemblyman for Padmore Electoral Area, Tema Community One, has taken the initiative to repair broken streetlights across the community in a bid to improve security and reduce crime in the area.
According to Amos, the move has already helped to reduce incidents of robbery and other related crimes that usually occurred in poorly lit areas during the night, explaining that well-lit streets have made it difficult for criminals to operate under the cover of darkness.
He told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview that he decided to act after receiving several complaints from residents about the growing level of insecurity in some parts of the electoral area, particularly at night.
He further said that many of the complaints pointed to the fact that the absence of functioning streetlights was encouraging criminal activities in the area.
“I realised that many of the streetlights had stopped working for some time and this was giving robbers the chance to attack innocent people, so I decided to repair them and since then, the attacks have reduced drastically,” he stated.
The Assemblyman called on residents to play their part by protecting the lights from theft or vandalism and urged them to report any damaged streetlights to their respective unit committee members or himself, promising prompt action to ensure the lights remain functional.
“I want to encourage all residents to be responsible citizens. if you see a streetlight that is not working or has been tampered with, report it immediately. we all need to work together to keep our community safe,” he appealed.
Amos promised to continue with the initiative and expand the repairs to other parts of the electoral area where lights were still not functioning and called on other Assemblymembers and local authorities to adopt similar approaches in their respective areas to help reduce crime and improve the quality of life for residents.
Some residents praised the Assemblyman’s efforts, and described the initiative as timely and commendable, especially at a time when security had become a major concern in many communities.
“He’s doing well, the streets are very important and have helped reduce robbery and attacks. I feel safe walking home after work, and I’m sure drivers can see the street well when driving at night,” Madam Naa Affortey, a nail technician, said.
