Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi, has criticised what he describes as inconsistencies in the government’s handling of the ‘suspicious flights’ allegations, saying the contradictory responses only served to heighten the controversy.
The issue began when Rev John Ntim Fordjour, Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee, alleged that certain flights landing at the Kotoka International Airport were transporting drugs and large sums of money.
President John Dramani Mahama subsequently directed national security agencies to work with Rev Fordjour to investigate the claims.
However, the government’s spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, later contradicted the President’s directive, dismissing the allegations as baseless and insisting that no illegal activity was detected on the flights.
Appearing on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Wednesday, April 9, Oppong Nkrumah questioned the conflicting messages from government officials.
“Contrary to what the president said, his minister for government communications is the one who came in… rubbishing all of this, saying that an investigation literally was not necessary,” the former Information Minister stated.
He added that the minister had already deemed the concerns “bogus” and suggested there may be an attempt to scapegoat Rev Fordjour.
Nkrumah maintained that the government’s shifting position raises broader concerns about transparency and internal coherence in addressing such sensitive national security issues.
Meanwhile, members of the Minority in Parliament earlier intervened to block an attempt by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to arrest Rev Fordjour in connection with the allegations.
