Roads Minister impounds overloaded trucks on Tarkwa–Agona Nkwanta road

Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has impounded several overloaded trucks for altering their axles and contributing to the rapid deterioration of the newly constructed Tarkwa–Agona Nkwanta highway.

The €95-million project, completed less than a year ago, is already showing visible signs of damage, with several portions of the asphalted road experiencing rutting.

As part of efforts to address the issue, the Minister, during a working tour on April 4, raised concerns over the continuous haulage of heavy-duty materials such as bauxite and manganese, which frequently damages the Tarkwa–Agona Nkwanta to Takoradi stretch.

While inspecting the 33.3 percent completed Agona-Nkwanta to Takoradi road, Mr. Agbodza commended JUSTMOH Construction for its quality delivery and commitment to the 24-hour construction model.

However, he cautioned that no serious country allows such heavy-duty goods to be hauled on expensive roads.
In response to the ongoing destruction, the Minister launched an unannounced enforcement operation on the highway on Monday, April 7.

Several trucks were arrested for overloading after being flagged by the axle weighing booth, prompting swift action to halt further damage and to ensure compliance with axle load regulations.
