Don’t despair – Afenyo-Markin urges NPP sympathisers

The Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has reassured members and sympathisers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) not to despair in their defeat but remain hopeful, citing plans for the party’s reorganization and revitalization.

He believes that the outcome of the reorganization process will make the party a formidable force, urging all to reconcile and fully participate.

Afenyo-Markin pointed to the NPP’s effective minority presence in Parliament as evidence of their potential, despite numerical disadvantages. This, he believes, demonstrates their readiness to win political power from their main political adversary, the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He expressed confidence that a united front, coupled with divine support, would secure victory for the NPP in the 2028 general elections.

The lawmaker made these remarks on Friday, April 4, 2025, when Isaiah Kwadwo Ampong, known in the musical circles as Great Ampong, and Nicholas Omani Acheampong, two musicians who have publicly supported the NPP in recent times, paid a courtesy call on him. Their visit was to honour and spur him on “to continue the great work he and the rest of the NPP MPs have been doing in Parliament”.

Led by Great Ampong, the two musicians urged Afenyo-Markin and members of the NPP to take solace in the biblical story in 1 Samuel 4:1-11 where the Philistines defeated Israel and took the Ark of Covenant, yet God remained with them.

Taking inspiration from the biblical story told by Great Ampong, Afenyo-Markin noted that the NPP, despite their defeat, has God with them, stressing that they will rejoice in their suffering knowing that “there is hope at the end of the tunnel”.

“I remember when we were in opposition, I used to visit Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at night. Anytime I get to his house, I will see prayer warriors led by Cynthia Morrison interceding for the party. It was the same during Kufuor’s era when the party was in opposition.

“I am also aware of other prayers that were formed to intercede for the party. So, to me, we know the solutions to our problems already. In all critical times; in all difficulties; and in all dangers, we know what to do – to call on God”, he noted.

He highlighted his difficulties in coming to terms with the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections considering their success in implementing social intervention policies and programs while in government. He acknowledged mistakes made in the 2024 general elections of which he strongly believes, informed the electorate, including their own party members, to either abstain or vote against them.

“If you look at our history, the NPP is the only political party that when it comes into government, it introduces life impacting social intervention policies and programs and implements them successfully. The NDC is all about making noises. They made a lot of noise promising to build landing beaches across the coastal belt but ended up doing nothing when they were in power between 2009 and 2017. It was the NPP under Akufo-Addo that we built 12 landing beaches in Edina, Dixcove, Moree, Effutu, Senya, Keta, JamesTown, Apaa and other places”, he noted.

He expressed optimism that the citizenry would recognize the party’s achievements and reward them in the 2028 general elections.

An elated Afenyo-Markin, who had just returned from a retreat organized by the party, said their resolve to reorganize and revitalize the party will hinge on critical pillars – reconciliation and engaging the youth, believing that these two when properly attended to, would redefine their formidable status and empower the party to reclaim political power from the NDC.

Turning to the two musicians, Afenyo-Markin said “What you have done today sends a strong signal out there that we are ready to bounce back and win the 2028 general elections. I strongly believe that with rebranding, a new posture, a new attitude and with prayer as our ultimate solution, God will give us our heart’s desire in 2028”.
