Dismissed Maritime Authority staff demand reinstatement, cite procedural concerns

Some dismissed workers of the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) are calling for their immediate reinstatement, describing the termination of their appointments as abrupt and unjustified.

The layoffs follow a government directive instructing state agencies to terminate the contracts of individuals employed after December 7, 2024. However, the affected staff insist they were hired before the stated cutoff date.

Speaking to Citi Business News on condition of anonymity, one of the affected workers said the decision to terminate their appointments lacks due process.

“We are seeking reinstatement because our appointment letters and the conditions of service clearly state that termination can only occur on grounds such as unsatisfactory performance, which none of us have been accused of,” the worker said.

He further pointed out that, per the organization’s policy, the dismissal of probationary staff must be referred to the board.

“Currently, there is no board in place at GMA. It’s concerning that such significant decisions are being made without proper oversight or procedure,” he added.

“There should have been an opportunity to be heard. Instead, decisions were made hastily and without the appropriate checks. We’ve also been informed that more terminations may follow,” the worker revealed.

The affected employees are urging authorities to review the decision and ensure that proper processes are followed in line with public sector employment regulations.
