Tong Defa and Dr Cassiel Ato Forson
Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, on Friday, April 4, 2025, met with the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa, to discuss ongoing and future cooperation between the two countries.
In a Facebook post, the Minister stated that it was time for Ghana to build a second gas processing plant, following China’s support in constructing the first one during his tenure as Deputy Minister.
“With China’s support, we built the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant during my time as Deputy Minister. It’s now time to build a second gas processing plant.”
Dr. Forson also noted that their discussions touched on major infrastructure projects announced by the President, including the Accra–Kumasi Expressway.
He indicated that these projects are being considered ahead of the Mid-Year Budget Review and emphasized the need for support from partners like China.
“I referenced the Chinese saying, ‘If you want to get rich, build roads first.’”
The Minister added that most Chinese-funded projects in Ghana are nearing completion and expressed hope that new ones will begin soon.
He also appealed for China’s support in completing Ghana’s debt restructuring process.
According to him, the Chinese Ambassador welcomed the engagement and affirmed China’s readiness to assist.
Dr. Forson further revealed that the bilateral agreement and development partnership are ready to be signed.
