Economist and Political Risk Analyst, Dr. Theo Acheampong, has called for the prosecution of those found responsible for the disappearance of containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) from the Tema Port.
This call comes after it was revealed that ECG had claimed to have 2,491 uncleared containers filled with vital cables and equipment necessary for the country’s energy infrastructure.
However, an independent audit conducted at the port discovered a significant discrepancy—only 1,134 containers were found, leaving 1,357 containers unaccounted for.
The financial value of the missing items is staggering, and the public is eager for answers as to how such a large quantity of crucial materials could simply disappear without being noticed.
Dr. Theo Acheampong, speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV, underscored the importance of thoroughly investigating the situation and holding accountable those responsible for the missing containers.
“I think we have to get to the bottom of the matter and I am all for criminal prosecution if people are found to have done things that go against the laws of the country. The report is shocking and it is absolutely shocking.”
Adding another layer of complexity to the matter, the former Managing Director of ECG, Samuel Dubik Mahama, claimed that he was not consulted by the investigative committee that looked into the missing containers.
However, Dr. Acheampong emphasized that while it would have been ideal for the committee to consult Mahama and hear his side of the story, it should not affect the accountability of those responsible for the missing containers.
“Maybe the investigative committee should have consulted the former ECG boss to hear his side of the story but at the end of the day, the ECG is also an institution and there are paperwork and employers that I believe the committee consulted.”
