Security consultant Richard Kumadoe has suggested that some 1300 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) missing at the Tema Port were moved through legitimate channels.
Explaining the procedural integrity at the port on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, April 5, Kumadoe remarked, “If you are aware of the way the port operates, there is no way anybody could walk there and go with a container.”
He emphasised that the parties involved, whether individuals or groups of companies, acted within the framework of legitimate access, even if their actions might raise concerns of legality.
“From an investigation point of view, these were individuals or groups of companies who acted legitimately, even though what they were involved in might be criminal.
“But they acted legitimately on behalf of ECG or whoever was given instructions, and it was based on that the port authorities granted them access to the containers,” Kumadoe clarified.
Dismissing suggestions that the containers could have been removed without authorisation, he insisted, “If anybody tells you [that] you can walk in there and move ECG containers, then the port security will not legitimate it. It is not right; it is not true.”
Kumadoe further highlighted that a standard procedure exists for moving containers from the port, and that this process was followed in this instance.
He pointed out that someone familiar with the procedure had knowledge of how these containers were moved, explaining their current absence from the port.
“There is a standard procedure by which ECG containers have been moved from the port and somebody is aware of that procedure and they followed same and that is how come these containers are out of there,” Kumadoe said.
