Prof. Naana Be Prepared Because Anything Can Happen – NDC’s Kwesi Ahwoi Advised

Ghana’s political landscape has been stirred by recent report concerning the health of Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang. The vice president was admitted to the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) on Saturday, March 29, 2025, following a sudden illness. Reports indicate that she is receiving specialized care and may need further treatment abroad.

This incident has drawn attention to a statement made by NDC stalwart Kwesi Ahwoi nearly a year ago, where he advised Vice President Opoku-Agyemang to remain prepared for unexpected events in her political journey.

During a gathering at his office in Labone in March 2024, Ahwoi reminded the vice president of the unpredictability of political life. He cited the example of former President John Mahama, who unexpectedly ascended to the presidency after the sudden passing of the late President John Evans Atta Mills in 2012.

Ahwoi’s words sparked mixed reactions among those present, as he cautioned that anything could happen, urging Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang to be ready at all times. “John Mahama was not ready to be president at the time, but nature schemed things in such a way that President Mills had to give way to John Mahama. Anything can happen, so, Naana, be ever prepared, as your motto says. Anything can happen, and you can become the President of the Republic of Ghana,” Ahwoi stated.

At the time, some attendees expressed concern over his remarks, with one person interrupting to say, “No, no, don’t pray for death.” However, Ahwoi clarified that his statement was not meant to wish misfortune upon anyone but rather to highlight the unpredictable nature of politics.

Now, with Vice President Opoku-Agyemang’s health concerns making headlines, some Ghanaians are recalling Ahwoi’s warning. While her illness is not linked to any political transition, the situation has reignited discussions about how political figures should always be prepared for unforeseen circumstances.

As Ghanaians continue to pray for her speedy recovery, the political conversation surrounding her future remains active. Many are hopeful that she will regain her strength soon and continue her duties as vice president.
