The Ghanaian boxing community was struck with tragedy on Saturday, 29 March, as Nigerian boxer Gabriel Olusewagun Olanrewaju collapsed in the ring during a bout against Ghana’s Jon Power Mbanugu at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
Despite immediate medical intervention, he was later pronounced dead at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (30 March) Amin Lamptey, Director of Communications for the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), all necessary medical and physical examinations were conducted before Olanrewaju’s participation in the fight.
The bout, which was part of an undercard event, saw the Nigerian boxer leading in the first two rounds before tragedy struck in the third round at two minutes and forty-six seconds.
“He was leading in rounds one and two, but in round three, he tripped against the ropes and went down on the canvas. The referee counted him, and upon realising something was wrong, immediately called for medical attention.”
The ringside physician and paramedics from the National Ambulance Service attempted to resuscitate Olanrewaju before transferring him to the hospital. Despite being placed on oxygen, he succumbed to his condition.
A Boxer with a Distinguished Record
Olanrewaju, aged 40, was an experienced and highly respected fighter, boasting a record of 23 fights with 13 wins by knockout. He was a former Nigerian national champion, as well as an African and West African champion. His impressive track record made him a formidable opponent in the bout against the younger 22-year-old Ghanaian boxer, Jon Power Mbanugu.
While concerns have been raised about the significant age difference between the two fighters, Lamptey dismissed suggestions that Olanrewaju’s age played a role in the unfortunate incident.
“Age does not determine a boxer’s capability. Bernard Hopkins became a world champion at 41. Olanrewaju had been a professional boxer for years and had a justifiable track record,” he explained.
Medical and Regulatory Considerations
Lamptey highlighted the stringent measures taken by the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) to ensure the health and safety of professional boxers.
He emphasised that Olanrewaju had undergone all necessary pre-fight medical checks before being cleared to participate.
“The GBA ensures that all professional boxers present valid licences, undergo medical assessments, and meet the required standards before competing. On fight night, medical officers and paramedics are stationed at the venue with an ambulance to respond to emergencies,” he noted.
Reactions and Next Steps
The Trust Sports Emporium, operators of the Bukom Boxing Arena, have postponed the commencement of the Amateur Boxing League in light of the incident.
The management assured that all necessary safety protocols were followed during the event and reaffirmed their commitment to boxer welfare.
The Ghana Boxing Authority has called for a thorough review of the events leading up to Olanrewaju’s death, ensuring that lessons are learnt and future safeguards strengthened. The boxing fraternity in both Ghana and Nigeria has expressed condolences to Olanrewaju’s family, recognising his contributions to the sport.
