Veteran journalist Kwesi Pratt has raised concerns over the multiple petitions submitted for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. He described the situation as unprecedented and questioned the reasons behind such actions.
In December 2024, law professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, also known as Kweku Azar, filed a petition accusing Chief Justice Torkornoo of misconduct and incompetence. However, after consulting the Council of State, then-President Nana Akufo-Addo dismissed the petition.
Recently, in March 2025, three additional petitions were submitted to President John Dramani Mahama, also seeking the Chief Justice’s removal. Following constitutional procedures, President Mahama referred these petitions to the Council of State for review.
In response, Chief Justice Torkornoo formally requested copies of the petitions to prepare her defense. She has been given a 10-day period to submit her response.
The details of the allegations remain undisclosed, fueling speculation and public debate. Kwesi Pratt’s concerns highlight broader apprehensions about the judiciary’s independence and the political implications of these petitions.
As the case progresses, it remains a significant issue in Ghana’s legal and political landscape, raising questions about accountability and judicial integrity.
