Dr Alex Ampaabeng, a former Deputy Minister of Finance, has agreed to the removal of the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.
He said this in an interview on Channel One TV during the Oxfam Tax Dialogue.
He explained that the removal of the E-Levy was in the right direction as the New Patriotic Party (NPP), in their manifesto, promised to scrap it.
“It is a distortionary tax; I have no worries about the removal. It will only create a gap, and how to fix it should be the agenda,” he stated.
Ampaabeng disclosed that E-Levy was just merely a ‘money for transportation tax’ that was deducting charges on money transfers without economic value.
He indicated that e-commerce taxation should be taken into consideration to generate more revenue for the development of the country.
The Deputy Minister of Finance, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, has given assurances that they are working to make sure all that was promised during the campaign is achieved.
He said that the property rate is an avenue to look at in generating revenue for the country. The property rate is used in the development of various communities, including things like street lights.
