Galamsey: Minority not against revocation of LI 2462

Manhyia North MP Akwasi Konadu has clarified the Minority’s stance on Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462, which seeks to revoke permissions for mining in forest reserves.

This comes after the NPP Minority insisted that the LI undergo a pre-laying process before being formally introduced in Parliament.

LI 2462, officially known as the Environmental Protection (Mining in Forest Reserves) Regulations 2022, currently permits mining in forest reserves if deemed in the national interest.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Tuesday, March 18, Konadu emphasized that the Minority is not against revoking the regulation but wants parliamentary procedures to be followed properly.

“The Minority is not against the LI, the revocation of portions of the LI which gives right to individuals to mine in forest reserves. What the Minority sought to do today was that the processes of passing an LI ought to be followed,” he stated.

The proposed LI has sparked debate in Parliament, with the Majority pushing for its swift passage, while the Minority insists on procedural adherence to ensure transparency and accountability.
