According to the report by Ghanaweb, Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has stated that he was the best candidate in the 2024 presidential election but has chosen to forgive those who did not vote for him.
Speaking at the funeral of Tweneboah Kodua Fokuo’s mother, the Member of Parliament for Manso Nkwanta, Dr. Bawumia expressed his belief that his leadership would have brought significant progress to Ghana but emphasized his commitment to unity and national development despite the election outcome.
The funeral, held in Kumasi on Saturday, March 15, 2025, saw the presence of numerous Members of Parliament (MPs) from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), as well as regional party executives and other high-profile figures.
The event served as an opportunity for party members to show solidarity with their bereaved colleague while also engaging in discussions on the country’s political climate.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Bawumia noted that while he had strong policies and a clear vision for the country, political dynamics led to a different outcome.
“I have no doubt that I was the best candidate to lead Ghana into a brighter future. However, democracy is about choices, and I respect the decision of the people,” he stated.
Dr. Bawumia further stressed the importance of moving forward as a nation, putting aside political divisions, and focusing on the collective good of the country.
“Elections can be tough, but leadership is about bringing people together. That is why I have no bitterness or resentment. Instead, I forgive those who may have opposed me, and I call on all Ghanaians to unite for the betterment of our beloved country,” he said.
The former Vice President also took the opportunity to reflect on his tenure in government, highlighting the achievements of the NPP under his leadership.
He cited economic reforms, digital transformation, and infrastructure projects as key accomplishments that laid a strong foundation for the country’s development.
Party supporters at the event expressed their admiration for Dr. Bawumia’s leadership and his decision to prioritize unity over political rivalry.
Many reaffirmed their confidence in him as a key figure in Ghanaian politics, with some calling on him to consider another bid for the presidency in the future.
Political analysts have interpreted Dr. Bawumia’s remarks as an attempt to maintain his influence within the NPP and prepare for future political opportunities.
Some believe his message of forgiveness and unity could help reshape his political image and build broader support across party lines
