Economic policy analyst Senyo Hosi has dismissed suggestions that the removal of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare was linked to his performance as reported by Ghana Web.
Speaking on The KeyPoints, Hosi argued that Dampare’s leadership may have unsettled some within the police service, ultimately making him a target.
He stated that the former IGP’s approach to policing had created divisions within the force, with some officers resisting reforms while others welcomed the changes.
“There’s some kind of division in the police because you have a group of people who wish the old way could be the path,” Hosi observed, suggesting that Dampare’s reforms were not universally accepted.
His remarks follow President John Mahama’s decision on March 13 to replace Dampare with Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno.
The appointment was confirmed in a statement signed by Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, citing constitutional provisions backing the decision.
Dampare, who was appointed as IGP in 2021, was widely regarded for his efforts to enhance professionalism within the service. However, his tenure also faced internal opposition from some senior officers.
While the government has not explicitly stated reasons for the change, Hosi believes Dampare’s removal was not due to inefficiency but rather the challenges his leadership style posed to some within the police hierarchy.
