The long-serving chief of Mpasaaso No. 2, Nana Amofa Twumasi II, has been destooled after reigning for 41 years. The decision was made following several allegations levelled against him, including questions about his royal lineage, involvement in illegal mining, popularly known as Galamsey, and failure to ensure proper accountability and oversight in the community.
The destoolment was carried out by the traditional authorities, who cited his alleged misconduct and disregard for traditional leadership responsibilities as key reasons for the action. Reports indicate that concerns had been raised over the years about his leadership, but recent developments led to his removal from office as the chief of Mpasaaso No. 2.
One of the major allegations levelled against Nana Amofa Twumasi II is his purported engagement in illegal mining activities in his community, a practice that has led to environmental degradation in various parts of Ghana. His alleged failure to uphold integrity of the chieftaincy institution and properly account to the people of Mpasaaso No. 2 further fuelled calls for his removal.
The destoolment of a chief is a significant event in Ghanaian traditional leadership, as it signals the loss of legitimacy and authority within the community. With his removal, the traditional council is expected to begin the process of selecting a new leader to restore confidence and proper governance in Mpasaaso No. 2.
The King of the Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfour Osei Tutu II has in many instances warned traditional leaders under his kingdom to desist from all kinds of illegal mining.
