Dr Cassiel Ato Forson and Ghana’s Economy
Prior to his becoming the Finance minister, Dr Ato Forson was the minority leader. He also served as the ranking member on the finance committee. He matched the then NPP government ‘boot-for-boot’ on economic policies. Ato Forson, as many call him demonstrated clear knowledge on the economy during his time in opposition and many will be looking forward to him to transform the economy. Dr Cassiel Ato Forson was also a former Deputy Finance Minister in the first term of Mahama’s administration.
Ghana’s economy had been described by many people especially members of the National Democratic Congress as a Junk Status. Rating institutions have also rated it very low in the previous administration. From Ken Ofori-Atta to Dr Amin Adam, some measures and policies were implemented to heal the ailing economy. The successes and failures of these policies are for the judgement of the good people of Ghana. The question many people are asking is, will this government abolish some of these policies the previous administration implemented?
Expectation of the Ghanaian People
For many people, the issue is a bread-and-butter affair. Surviving under the harsh economic environment is a daily dilemma and the masses are looking for a ‘saviour’ in times like these. Several taxes were introduced under the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government and a lot of people complained about them. It is even fresh in the minds of Ghanaians how the controversial E-Levy tax caused a ‘fight’ in parliament. A lot of people are looking forward to the government scrapping off some taxes which a section has labelled as nuisance taxes. Some of these taxes include Betting tax, E-levy, Covid-tax. Will there be an introduction of new taxes? We live to see what the honourable minister will say.
