Former president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah
Decades after Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s overthrow as Ghana’s first president, the country continues to honour his immense contributions every year.
Mary Soma Otoo, a 93-year-old woman who shares Dr. Nkrumah’s ideologies, has provided a detailed description of the country’s first president.
In an interview with Kafui Dey, shared on TikTok, Mary Soma Otoo described Dr. Kwame Nkrumah as a selfless leader and a man of action who deeply believed in the vision and prosperity of Africa.
“Osagyefo was a very humble person but if you want to joke with him about independence, you wouldn’t have it. He is humble by nation but don’t joke with his vision. He was a man of action who hated lies. He prefers you tell him the truth,” she said.
Mary Soma Otoo also debunked rumours that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah stole state funds for his personal gain.
“Where is the money? He didn’t even build at his birthplace. He says he didn’t even come from Nkroful but he came from Ghana, why didn’t he build a mansion for himself and his mother?” she added.
Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was overthrown through a military coup d’état on February 24, 1966, by senior military officers such as Colonel E.K. Kotoka, Major A. A. Afrifa, Lieutenant General (retired) J. A. Ankrah, and Police Inspector General J.W.K.
