Shops selling mining explosives in Konongo Odumase, Ashanti Region, have exploded, leaving several people injured and possibly dead.

Reports indicate that some residents attacked personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service, pelting them with stones and forcing them to flee the scene.

It is unclear what caused the massive explosions.

In a video shared on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, sounds of explosions could be heard while residents ran helter-skelter for their lives.

The number of casualties and the extent of the damage caused by the huge blast and ensuing fire are not immediately known.

On January 20, 2022, a large explosion occurred in the Appiatse community near Bogoso in the Western Region when a truck carrying explosives was involved in an accident.

After the initial blast, people in the community rushed to the scene when a second explosion occurred a few minutes later, resulting in the destruction of dozens of buildings.

Over 3,300 people were affected by the incident, with 17 confirmed dead and approximately 59 injured. Reports from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) indicated that 500 buildings were destroyed, leaving about 1,500 people homeless. The explosion also damaged major roads in the area, stranding many commuters.

In response, the Akufo-Addo administration ensured the reconstruction of housing units to accommodate the affected residents.
