President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that the 68th Independence Anniversary celebration at the Jubilee House has saved the country a whooping amount had it been held at the Independent Square.
Delivering his speech at the ceremony on Thursday, March 6, 2025 the President said the event had initially been estimated to cost the country GHS 20 million had it been held at the traditional grounds, the Independence Square.
“This year we received estimate of at least 20 million Ghana cedis for holding the event at the Independence Square on the same scale as the previous year,” John Mahama noted.
He explained that however, considering the current economic crisis it would be “unconscionable to spend that kind of money for the few hours of celebration.”
This prompted Government to host this year’s celebration at the seat of government, the Jubilee House to cut huge cost.
This decision the President said “will save us 95% of estimated cost of the event.”
According to the President, the state spent 15 million Ghana cedis on last year’s celebration in Koforidua and spent 13.7 million cedis on the previous year’s celebration in Ho in the Volta Region.
President John Dramani Mahama noted that despite reduction in the cost of hosting the event, it’s significant cannot be ignored as “it lifts the flame of independence in Sub-Saharan Africa by inspiring other countries yield to colonial exploitation to seek independence and self-determination.”
“Nonetheless this scale down does not diminish the importance and significance of this occasion in any anyway.
“It’s the single most important event in our history as it sets us on the path of nationhood,” the President stressed.
