An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced an unemployed man to two years’ imprisonment for stealing electrical cables at La in Accra.
Ebenezer Tetteh was found guilty of stealing the cables, the value and owner of which were unknown to the court.
Charged with theft, Tetteh pleaded guilty with an explanation.
The court, presided over by Sedinam Awo Kwadam, convicted Tetteh on his own plea.
According to the court, his explanation confirmed his plea of guilt.
The court ordered that the stolen cables remain in police custody until the rightful owner could prove ownership.
The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Daniel Ofori Appiah, informed the court that the complainant and witnesses in the case were police personnel from the Cantonment Division, while the accused resided in Apapa, a suburb of La in Accra.
On February 20, 2025, at about 1:00 a.m., the complainant and witnesses, who were part of a police patrol team, were conducting their routine night patrols when they stopped a taxicab near the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel.
During a routine search of the vehicle, the police discovered a quantity of electrical cables, which the accused, who was on board, claimed belonged to him.
The prosecution stated that the police became suspicious after interrogating the accused, as he failed to provide a convincing explanation regarding the ownership of the cables. Consequently, he was taken to the La Police Station along with the cables.
While investigations were ongoing, the accused admitted to stealing the electrical cables but had yet to lead the police to the location where he stole them.
The police are making efforts to locate the rightful owner of the stolen cables.
