Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkonoo Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkonoo

The University of Ghana School of Law (UGSoL), in collaboration with the Institute for African Women in Law (IAWL), will host a landmark event to publicly adopt and mainstream the Gender Equality in Law Model Policy of IAWL and honour Professor Akua Kuenyehia with IAWL’s Legacy Award.

This two-in-one event will occur on Monday, March 3, 2025, at 11 am at the University of Ghana School of Law Auditorium.

The Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana, Her Ladyship Gertrude Torkornoo, and Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, will be the Special Guests of Honour at the event. Law lecturers, renowned lawyers, judges, high-level personalities and law students will also attend.

The public adoption of IAWL’s Gender Equality in Law Model Policy will showcase UGSoL’s commitment to human rights, equality, and adherence to the Affirmative Action Act of 2024, furthering its alignment with international, regional, and national laws that promote women’s representation and participation in decision-making.

This model policy, which addresses sexual harassment, equal hiring and promotion, equal pay for equal work, and gender bias and stereotypes, is a product of IAWL’s Gender Equality in Law Campaign (GELC) launched in Accra, Ghana, on 5 July 2024. The Model Policy is a framework for advancing gender equality within the legal profession.

Professor Akua Kuenyehia, the first female Professor of Law and the first female Dean of the University of Ghana School of Law, will receive the Institute for African Women in Law’s Legacy Award, honouring her extraordinary contributions to legal education, women’s rights, the rule of law, and international justice.

We look forward to having all stakeholders in the legal and judicial professions, as well as the university community and the public, attend this important event.

Together, we can set the tone for creating a gender-responsive work environment in the legal profession and honour a legal luminary and pioneer African woman in law.
