NPP Must Be Reminded That Their Own Kwaku Kwarteng Called the Economy a Ponzi Scheme– Manasseh Fires

Renowned investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has reignited the debate over the mismanagement of Ghana’s economy under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, reminding them of the words of their own member, Kwaku Kwarteng.

In a strongly-worded Facebook post, Manasseh highlighted how, even before leaving office, top NPP officials acknowledged the disastrous state of the economy.

“Journalists should remind the NPP that Kwaku Kwarteng said in 2024 that the economy was being managed like a ‘Ponzi scheme,’” Manasseh wrote, referencing a statement made by the former Chairman of Parliament’s Finance Committee and a key member of the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia economic team.

Kwarteng’s statement, made in 2024, was a shocking admission of financial recklessness under the NPP government. At the time, Ghana was struggling under ballooning debt, a collapsing currency, and an IMF bailout program, leading to widespread economic hardship.

His description of the country’s financial system as a Ponzi scheme—a fraudulent system where money from new investors is used to pay returns to earlier investors—suggested that the economy was being run unsustainably, with little long-term planning.

Manasseh’s post comes amid persistent NPP attacks on President John Dramani Mahama, who took office in January 2025. NPP supporters have accused Mahama of failing to quickly fix the economy, ignoring the magnitude of the economic disaster he inherited.

By bringing up Kwarteng’s comments, Manasseh is challenging the NPP’s credibility, reminding Ghanaians that even their own officials admitted to mismanaging the economy before they left power.

His post has sparked widespread reactions, with many agreeing that the NPP should take responsibility rather than shifting blame.

As Ghana continues to grapple with economic challenges, the debate over who is responsible and how to fix it remains at the center of national discourse.
