GFA’s Oduro Sarfo ‘COUNTERS’ president Mahama over transparency demand on Black Stars budget

Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council member Oduro Sarfo has responded to President John Mahama’s call for transparency regarding government spending on national teams, particularly the Black Stars.

In his 2025 State of the Nation Address (SONA), President Mahama emphasized that there should be no secrecy in how much the government spends on national teams, stating that budgets submitted by the GFA and other associations must be made public.

However, Oduro Sarfo has countered the President’s remarks, arguing that the GFA does not directly handle the Black Stars’ finances.

“The President has been misled in making that statement. The GFA does not spend on the Black Stars. The FA submits the budget for approval, and once approved, the Ministry handles all financial matters,” Sarfo stated.

President John Mahama assured Ghanaians that his government will ensure full transparency regarding expenditure on national teams and sports-related activities.

He emphasized that all budgets submitted by the GFA and other sports bodies would be made publicly accessible.

“There will be no secrecy on how much the government spends on the national teams. The budgets presented by the GFA and other associations must be known by the public. After all, it’s the taxpayers’ funds that are used to fund these activities,” Mahama stated at the 2025 SONA.
