SONA 2025: Ghana’s Sports is at a critical juncture – President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has acknowledged the current state of Ghanaian sports, describing it as being at a critical juncture while reflecting on the country’s rich sporting history.

His remarks come at a time when concerns have been raised over the declining standards in Ghanaian sports, particularly in football, where the national teams and domestic leagues have struggled to maintain dominance on the international stage.

President Mahama made these statements while delivering the 2025 State of the Nation’s address on the floor of Parliament.

Speaking on the challenges and future of sports development in Ghana, the president highlighted the nation’s past remarkable achievements in disciplines such as boxing, football, and athletics, which have earned Ghana global recognition.

“Ghana’s sports now finds itself at a very critical juncture. Historically, our nation has been celebrated and has had remarkable achievements in boxing, football, and athletics,” President Mahama stated.

The government is expected to roll out new policies and initiatives to revitalize sports in the country, focusing on infrastructure development, youth investment, and improved management systems to restore Ghana’s place as a powerhouse in African and global sports.
