The Deputy Minister of Interior-designate, Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, has stated that only President John Dramani Mahama has the authority to determine the future of the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

Appearing before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Tuesday, February 25, 2024, Terlabi emphasised that such decisions rest solely with the president.

He advised the public to leave the decision regarding the IGP’s fate to President Mahama, stating that he wished he had the authority to make such a decision himself.

“Mr. Chair, as I said, I wish I had that authority, but I don’t have, and the appointing authority may be looking at other things other than what you think is the case.

“I don’t know whether this is a good platform for me to give you a particular example. Sometimes, you think you are doing your best as a football player, but your coach will substitute you. What he sees outside sitting on the bench is different from what is happening on the road, what you see on the foot. So, let us leave it to the president, the appointing authority, to decide,” he noted.

On July 21, 2021, Dr. Dampare was appointed by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the acting Inspector General of Police of the Ghana Police Service taking over from James Oppong-Boanuh who had been serving since October 2019.

On October 8, 2021, he was sworn in as the substantive IGP.
