According to the post shared on twitter today by GHOne TV today Sunday, a police officer and another suspected thief were shot dead after a foiled robbery attempt in Ghana’s Ashanti Region.
The incident, which occurred around the outskirts of Kumasi, has left the community in shock, as residents process the involvement of a law enforcement official in a criminal activity.
The robbery unfolded late at night when the suspects reportedly attempted to rob a passenger vehicle traveling along a secluded stretch of road. According to police sources, the vehicle’s driver noticed unusual activity ahead and quickly alerted a nearby police patrol team.
Within minutes, officers arrived on the scene, only to find two armed men attempting to force the vehicle to stop. A fierce exchange of gunfire ensued as the patrol team attempted to apprehend the suspects.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a barrage of gunshots, with one resident stating,
“It was as if a war was going on. We heard gunshots and feared for our lives.” Another witness said, “The passengers were terrified, some even tried to escape from the car. The police acted quickly, though.”
As the shootout came to an end, both suspects were subdued, with one pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities were reportedly shocked to find that one of the deceased suspects was an off-duty police officer.
Investigators are now probing how the officer became involved in the robbery, with officials hinting that there may be more accomplices yet to be identified.
A spokesperson from the regional police command assured the public that the force remains committed to tackling internal misconduct, stating,
“We are deeply saddened by this incident and are taking all necessary steps to investigate and bring anyone else involved to justice. The integrity of our police force is paramount, and we will act swiftly to address any breach of that trust.”
While the investigation continues, local leaders have called for increased security measures and a renewed focus on rooting out corruption within the police force. One community elder remarked,
“This incident is a reminder that we need to strengthen our systems. It’s disturbing to think that those sworn to protect us could be involved in such activities.”
