The Member of Parliament of South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has extended an apology to Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, over remarks he made concerning the use of police outriders by government officials.
According to a report by 3news.com, Dafeamekpor offered the apology during a recent appearance on TV3’s Key Points, acknowledging that his comments may have overstepped certain boundaries.
“He [Afenyo-Markin] is my leader, I may have crossed the line a bit, so for that, I apologise. But these were matters I was saying in a general context, and I was juxtaposing conduct before now with conduct that is ongoing,” he stated.
The MP further explained that his concern was not about occasional use but about the broader issue of how such privileges are exercised.
He noted that if Afenyo-Markin had to travel across multiple locations for official duties and required a motorcade for efficiency, it would be understandable.
Dafeamekpor’s initial comments came during a discussion on February 22, 2025, where he alleged that a previous Majority Leader moved around with 50 military personnel in convoy.
While he did not directly name Afenyo-Markin, legal practitioner Martin Kpebu, who was also on the program, suggested the remarks referred to the current Minority Leader.
Afenyo-Markin later called into the show to set the records straight, stating that the use of police outriders is a standard practice for Majority Leaders to ensure smooth movement in line with their demanding roles.
He emphasised that previous Minority Leaders, such as Haruna Iddrisu and Benjamin Kumbuor, had also been accorded similar privileges.
He dismissed claims of excessive security detail as baseless, insisting that he had never had a 50-military convoy accompanying him.
