Mr. President, Ghana Is Not A Banana Republic, And We Refuse To Be Taken As Naive Citizens

A prominent pan-Africanist and civil society advocate, Akaneweo Kabiru Abdul, has launched a fierce criticism against President John Dramani Mahama, accusing him of compromising Ghana’s governance standards with the appointment of Dr. Johnson Asiama as Governor of the Bank of Ghana.

In a strongly worded Facebook post, Kabiru insisted that Ghana is not a “banana republic” and that its citizens will not tolerate decisions that undermine accountability.

Kabiru Questions Asiama’s Appointment

Kabiru described the appointment as “controversial and disgraceful,” arguing that Dr. Asiama was previously implicated in financial misconduct during his tenure as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

He highlighted two major allegations against Asiama:

1. Wilfully causing financial loss to the state – Over GH¢450 million was allegedly disbursed to uniBank recklessly and without due process.

2. Violating the Bank of Ghana Act – He was accused of breaching Section 46(h) of Act 612 and Section 46A of Act 918, key financial regulatory laws.

Kabiru expressed outrage that the Mahama administration’s Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, worked to dismiss the case against Asiama shortly after winning the 2024 election.

“Who Is the Real Clearing Agent?” – Kabiru Challenges Mahama

The activist accused Mahama of double standards, reminding him that he had once criticized former President Akufo-Addo for protecting corrupt officials.

“You called Akufo-Addo a ‘clearing agent’ for corruption. Now, tell us, Mr. President, what exactly are you doing?” he questioned.

He further warned that if the Council of State approved Asiama’s appointment, it would seriously damage their credibility.

Threat to Involve International Financial Institutions

Kabiru vowed to escalate the issue internationally if Mahama did not reverse the appointment.

“If you do not reverse this appointment, I will personally write to IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and the World Bank Country Director to alert them that the President of Ghana is enabling corruption under an IMF program,” he declared.

A Call for Accountability

Kabiru concluded by reaffirming his commitment to resisting state capture and fighting against corruption.

“For God and country, we will not allow you to gamble with our national resources,” he vowed.

As this controversy unfolds, all eyes will be on Mahama’s administration to see how it responds to growing criticism over key appointments and governance decisions.
