Ken Ofori-Atta (Right) has been declared wanted by the Office of the Special Prosecutor
The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has officially declared former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta a fugitive and a wanted person for criminal conduct.
Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng, speaking at press briefing in Accra on February 12, 2025, stated that the former minister was involved in four high-profile corruption cases.
These cases pertain to major financial transactions and procurement deals that took place during his tenure.
The Special Prosecutor noted that Ken Ofori-Atta had been invited multiple times for questioning but refused to cooperate.
According to him, Ken Ofori-Atta’s lawyers have stated that he is currently outside the country for medical reasons.
Key cases under investigation
1. National Cathedral procurement scandal
The OSP is investigating procurement irregularities related to the controversial National Cathedral project. The project, valued at over $58 million, is under scrutiny for funding transparency, possible financial mismanagement, and procurement breaches.
2. Strategic Mobilization Limited (SML) Contract
A contract between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilization Limited (SML) is also under investigation. The deal, allegedly worth billions, was signed during Ofori-Atta’s tenure. However, its legality and legitimacy are being examined for potentially causing financial losses to the state.
3. ECG and Beijing Jao loss reduction contract
The OSP is also probing a contract between the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Beijing Jao, aimed at reducing system losses. Investigators are assessing whether due process was followed and whether the contract resulted in financial losses for the country.
4. Health Ministry’s contracts with Service Ghana Auto Limited (Ambulances Deal)
Contracts awarded by the Ministry of Health to Service Ghana Auto Limited for the procurement of ambulances are under investigation by the OSP.
Meanwhile, the OSP has warned that if the former finance minister refuses to return voluntarily, measures will be taken to compel his return.
