According to GhanaWeb, former Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul has challenged the moral authority of John Dramani Mahama’s administration to pursue political adversaries, particularly after it has halted various corruption-related prosecutions.
Since the National Democratic Congress (NDC) assumed power, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice has put a stop to several high-profile cases involving former officials from Mahama’s first presidential term.
Despite calls from analysts and anti-corruption advocates for transparency regarding the decision to drop these cases, the government has not provided any explanations.
In a discussion on Accra-based Asempa FM, Nitiwul asserted that the current government lacks the ethical foundation to target political rivals while absolving its own members facing corruption charges.
He questioned how the government could justify such actions, especially after it had granted favors to its members, such as the Tamale Kaladan Park deal.
“You should let the law work. People have been charged with causing financial loss to the state and you say you have the power to discontinue the case. So you discontinue and go and arrest your political opponent for same, is that how you want to run the country?” he questioned on Accra-based Asempa FM.
Nitiwul emphasized that if the NDC believed their members were innocent of the accusations, justice should have been pursued through legal channels.
He warned that a troubling precedent has been established, suggesting that future administrations might also dismiss cases simply because the Attorney General has the authority to do so.
