Stephen Adu Arphul, chairman of the group spoke to the media
A political youth group affiliated with the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Jaman South NDC Youth for Development, has appealed to His Excellency John Dramani Mahama to ensure that the constituency receives its fair share of political appointments.
Citing the NDC’s impressive performance in the 2020 and 2024 elections—which led to the party winning the presidential vote in the constituency for the first time in many years—the group emphasized that their call for representation in government is based on their demonstrated and unwavering commitment to the party.
Speaking at a press conference in Drobo, the Chairman of the group, Stephen Adu Arphul, attributed the party’s remarkable performance to the support of stalwarts such as Williams Okofo-Dartey, the former Member of Parliament for the area, who provided resources and logistics for the smooth running of the party’s campaign activities.
“During the 2020 elections, the NPP secured 29,429 votes, while the NDC received 16,337 votes, a difference of 13,092. However, in the 2024 general election, the NDC was able to turn things around and win the presidential election in Jaman South for the first time in history. This success was largely due to the party winning the parliamentary seat for the first time in 2020, after which the MP became a key financier, providing resources and logistics,” he stated.
Stephen Adu Arphul also pointed out that under the previous NPP government, individuals from the constituency were appointed to high-profile positions such as Deputy Attorney General, Deputy Aviation Minister, Deputy CEO of the Middle Belt Development Authority, and Commissioner of Customs. However, he lamented that under the Fourth Republic, the NDC has never appointed any constituents to similar high-profile positions.
“We are pleading with the party hierarchy to review its records of political appointments. They will be surprised to find that Jaman South has never benefited from any ministerial appointment, CEO position in a public corporation, presidential staffer role, or board membership since the inception of the Fourth Republic,” he said.
He made a passionate appeal to H.E. John Dramani Mahama to ensure that capable and dedicated members from the constituency are given opportunities to serve at various levels of government. He emphasized that such appointments would not only strengthen the NDC’s base in the constituency but also promote political inclusivity, as the continued neglect of Jaman South in terms of appointments would not be in the party’s best interest.
“For the betterment of the party and the development of Jaman South at large, we humbly plead with H.E. John Dramani Mahama (the humble servant) to kindly consider Jaman South in his upcoming appointments. This will help us establish stronger political footholds within the constituency and make the party more attractive,” he urged.
On his part, the organiser of the group, Nurudeen Siise, acknowledged the significant contributions of the Jaman South Constituency to Ghana’s political landscape. He urged the appointing authorities to recognize and reward dedicated party members from the constituency who have sacrificed their time and resources for the party’s growth. Doing so, he said, would inspire and encourage the youth to remain committed to the party.
