Mahama Unveils Plan to Introduce a Single Multipurpose Identity Card

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to modernize Ghana’s identification and data management systems by integrating the birth registration system with the Integrated Population Registration System(IPRS) to ensure seamless communication between government agencies. Speaking on the initiative, the President emphasized that both systems would be launched simultaneously, with funding already secured through the national budget, as confirmed by the Minister of Finance.

As part of the initiative, a National Data Centre is being established near parliament house to serve as the backbone for securely storing and managing Ghana’s data. The centre will host essential servers and infrastructure to support the integration of key national databases, ensuring seamless communication between government agencies.

“Once we start the IPRS system, then we will start the process of linking together all the other databases,” President Mahama stated. The SSNIT, NHIS, passport office, and DVLA will all be able to connect to the data system, allowing for a unified and efficient national identification process.

The ultimate goal, according to president John Dramani Mahama, is to introduce a single multipurpose card that consolidate various national identification details, including health insurance, SSNIT, driver’s license information etc. This he explained, would eliminate the duplication of data collection efforts by different institutions and streamline services delivery for Ghanaians.

With the establishment of the National Data Centre and the launch of the IPRS, Ghana is set to take a significant step towards digital transformation, ensuring a more efficient, secure and integrated national identification system.
