Dr. Emmanuel Freeman, a computer scientist and head of the Computer Science Department at the Ghana Communication Technology University, has advised Hon. Sam George Nertey, the Communications, Digitization, and Innovation Minister-designate, to leverage expert knowledge and reduce politics to achieve success.
Dr. Freeman emphasized that politics can’t solve technology, communication, and digitization problems, and that Hon. Sam George should take decisions based on expert advice rather than political considerations.
He made these remarks in a telephone interview on GBC Radio Central Morning Show on Thursday, 6th February, 2025. The computer scientists noted that the minister-designate’s background in Agricultural Engineering, coupled with his numerous certificates in computing and communications, makes him a strong fit for the job.
To be successful, Dr. Freeman stressed that Hon. Sam George will need to combine managerial skills with technical expertise. He highlighted the minister-designate’s experience serving on parliamentary committees and in ministerial roles, including as deputy at the communications ministry, gives him a significant advantage.
The Ministry of Communication oversees several critical agencies, including the National Communications Authority (NCA), Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), and the Cyber Security Authority. Dr. Freeman noted that the ministry plays a vital role in the country’s development, particularly in the era of the fourth industrial revolution, which focuses on AI, robotics, and reducing manual labour.
Ultimately, Dr. Freeman expressed optimism about Hon. Sam George’s potential to drive innovation and technological development in Ghana, citing his encouraging performance during the vetting process.
