Ghana will suffer huge global reputational risk if Dr Asiama is approved as Governor

The Minority Caucus has issued a stark warning regarding the potential global reputational risks Ghana could face if Dr. Johnson Asiama is confirmed as the Governor of the Central Bank. In a recent press conference, the opposition lawmakers articulated their concerns over President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to consider Dr. Asiama for the pivotal role amidst ongoing criminal charges against him.

During the address, the Minority MPs expressed confusion over the president’s haste to appoint Dr. Asiama without allowing the legal proceedings to conclude. “We are at a loss as to why President Mahama could not wait for the completion of the process before appointing Dr. Johnson Asiama,” they stated. They further emphasized the importance of clarifying Dr. Asiama’s legal status, arguing that both the state and the governor himself would benefit from resolving the allegations surrounding him.

The MPs voiced their apprehension that the president’s actions imply a lack of transparency and integrity, stating, “This decision gives us reason to believe that Dr. Johnson Asiama is not clean.” They underscored the critical nature of the role he is nominated for, particularly as Ghana navigates its current International Monetary Fund (IMF) program, which demands utmost credibility in financial dealings.

“This solid attempt to discontinue the proceedings of the criminal charges against Dr. Asiama is precisely why we believe a potential criminal convict should not hold such an important office,” the Minority asserted. They raised questions about how international partners, including the IMF and the International Finance Corporation, would perceive Ghana if one of its leading negotiators is embroiled in serious legal issues.

The press conference captured significant public interest, particularly after TV3 Ghana shared a video of the event on their official Instagram page on February 5, 2025, prompting widespread reactions from viewers.

As the debate surrounding Dr. Asiama’s appointment continues, the Minority Caucus remains steadfast in its position, advocating for accountability and transparency in the appointment of key government officials. The coming days will be crucial as the nation watches how this situation unfolds and its potential implications for Ghana’s global standing.
