The Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana has criticized the decision of the Education Ministry to allegedly scrap teacher trainee allowances.
The Minister for Education during an engagement with the leadership of Principals of Colleges of Education, Ghana (PRINCOF) on January 30, 2025, hinted at the decision to scrap the allowance scheme and transition to an enhanced student loan system.
The criticism comes in the wake of the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu’s hint on the government’s plan to discontinue the teacher trainee allowance and transition students at the colleges of education onto an enhanced student loan scheme.
Speaking to Citi News, the President of the Association, Razak Soale advocated for an increase in the monthly allowances disbursed to teacher trainees.
He added that the Ministry should consider alternative means of improving the system.
“We do not entirely agree with it, considering where we find ourselves. The idea behind the reintroduction of the teacher’s trainee allowances in 2017, was to help students cater for their basic needs and equally help the college’s infrastructures.
“The infrastructures in the school can not cater for the student, so we feel there should be an increase in the allowances for teacher trainees to help students cater for their needs and enhance the feeding system in the college.”
Meanwhile, the association is set to meet the Ministry of Education on February 19, 2025, to present other alternatives to the issue.
