According to GhanaWeb, the Appointments Committee of Parliament received a petition concerning one of President John Dramani Mahama’s nominees, but Bernard Ahiafor, the committee chairman, deemed it insignificant.
In an interview on Channel One TV’s The Point of View, Ahiafor explained that the petition was directed against the nomination itself rather than the vetting process, which meant it was outside the committee’s jurisdiction.
He noted that only one petition had been submitted and emphasized that it lacked importance.
“We only received one petition, and it is nothing to write home about. It was a petition against the nomination, and for us, our jurisdiction is invoked after the person is nominated to be vetted,” he stated.
According to him, the committee’s role comes into play only after a nominee is put forward for vetting.
Therefore, any petition regarding the nomination should be directed to the relevant authority responsible for nominations.
After reviewing the petition’s details, Ahiafor and the Minority Leader concluded that it held no substantial value.
He stated that upon examining the contents, they agreed it was not significant enough to warrant further consideration.
“Having looked at the content of the petition, it was nothing to write home about. So myself and the Minority Leader looked at the petition and came to a conclusion that it does not have probative value,” Ahiafor said.
