Medical lab scientists call for immediate action on the outbreak of Cerebrospinal Meningitis

The Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) has expressed deep concerns over the recent outbreak of Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) in parts of northern Ghana.

In a statement issued on February 4, 2025, the association warned that if swift action is not taken, the highly infectious disease could spread further, endangering lives.

The statement indicated, “Cerebrospinal Meningitis is a serious medical condition that causes inflammation of the meninges, the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Without prompt diagnosis and treatment, it can result in severe neurological damage or death.”

In response to the outbreak, GAMLS emphasised the critical role of medical laboratory testing in identifying and managing CSM cases.

The association also outlined measures implemented to combat the disease, including enhanced disease surveillance, scaling up laboratory testing, strict infection prevention protocols, and increased public health education.

They reassured Ghanaians that laboratory professionals nationwide are committed to providing accurate and timely diagnostic services to aid in clinical decision-making and patient care.

The statement further indicated, “GAMLS also takes this opportunity to advocate for the strengthening and advancement of microbiological laboratory capacities nationwide. Enhancing laboratory infrastructure and capabilities will improve outbreak detection, surveillance, and response efforts, not only for CSM but also for other emerging infectious diseases.

“We reaffirm our commitment to supporting the national response to this outbreak and call on all stakeholders to collaborate effectively to mitigate the spread of cerebrospinal meningitis in Ghana. Together, we can safeguard the health and well-being of our communities.”
