Galamsey Update: The illegal Miners Fled and Left Sixteen Excavators And Other Items – Erastus Asare

Erastus Asare Donkor, a Ghanaian broadcast, investigative, and environmental journalist known for his reporting on the impacts of illegal mining and climate change in Ghana has given an update on galamsey at Anwiaso South Forest reserve.
In a post shared on his Facebook page on 4th February, 2025, he wrote:
“On 30th January, 2025, following intelligence reports, a joint operation was conducted by the Rapid Response Unit of the Forestry Commission, the Military and the Police in the Afao Hills forest reserve and the Anwiaso South Forest reserve, all in the Bibiani Forest District to rid the place of illegal miners (Galamseyers).Â
In all Sixteen (16) Excavators, one (1) Bulldozer and other mining equipments were left in the reserve as the illegal miners fled before the team reached the scene.”
According to Erasmus, the team in their interactions with local people, announced a deadline for those who brought the excavators there to move them out of the reserve, else drastic action will be taken when the team returns after the deadline.Â
He also reported that there has been extensive damage to a large area of the Forest, amidst ecosystems and Biodiversity loss.
