Kofi Adams, the Minister-designate for Sports and Recreation, has assured Ghanaians of his commitment to addressing the welfare of retired footballers if approved by Parliament.
Speaking during his vetting by the Appointments Committee on January 30, Adams expressed concern over the financial and health challenges faced by some retired footballers.
He emphasized the need for structured support to safeguard their well-being.
“We will encourage active sportsmen to contribute to a pension scheme. If I am approved, we will come out with modalities to see what we can do for those who have retired.”
Addressing financial challenges within the sports sector, Adams acknowledged the urgent need for reforms to resolve ongoing debt issues.
Adams pledged to engage stakeholders and develop innovative solutions to secure a sustainable future for Ghana’s sports sector.
His promises have raised hopes for meaningful reforms and improved welfare for sports professionals, both active and retired.
“I’m aware of the GHC468 million debt that must be dealt with. We will strategise to ensure that the National Sports Authority (NSA) plays its role as regards Black Stars funding to resolve the issues.”
