The Minister of Labour, Employment, and Job Creation-designate, Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, has issued a strong warning to foreign companies mistreating Ghanaian workers.

During his vetting session before the Appointments Committee on Thursday, January 30, 2025, Pelpuo vowed to enforce stricter measures to protect workers’ rights and ensure safer, fairer working conditions.

Pelpuo emphasised that any foreign company found guilty of abusing Ghanaian workers would face the full force of the law.

He expressed deep concern over reports of exploitation, harassment, and physical abuse in foreign-owned companies, stating that such practices are unacceptable and illegal.

“Human rights are an area I take a particular interest in. When I see people suffering elsewhere, it moves me. Right here in my own country, I want to enforce the right to work, the right to safety, and ensure that abuse never happens,” he said.

He reiterated his commitment to upholding workers’ dignity and safety, both domestically and abroad, and promised swift action against any violations.

“It’s against the law, and it should not happen,” he affirmed.

Pelpuo also addressed concerns about the adequacy of the Labour Act (Act 651) in tackling workplace harassment and violence.

While acknowledging the Act’s existing provisions, he stressed the need for better enforcement and adaptation to modern challenges.

“The Labour Act defines our approach to labour relations. The issues we face are not due to gaps in the Act but rather a lack of full implementation. However, given changes in the labour market and workplace reforms, we must review it again,” he explained.

Pelpuo’s statements come amid growing concerns over the mistreatment of Ghanaian workers in foreign-owned companies, including unsafe working conditions and unfair pay.
