The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has declared its decision to withdraw from all Media General platforms, including TV3, 3FM, and Onua FM, effective immediately.

Richard Ahiagbah, the party’s head of communications, signed the news release, which was issued on Sunday, January 26, 2025.

According to the statement, the decision comes after the NPP attempted to engage with Media General’s production team, hosts, and management for several months to address concerns about what the party calls “unprofessional, biased, and abusive moderation” by the media house’s hosts. Despite numerous pledges from Media General since 2023, the NPP argues that wrongdoing and perceived injustice have persisted without redress.

The party cited specific examples of bias and unprofessional behavior, like as a regular guest making incendiary remarks about former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during a Madam Keminni Amanor-hosted program. The NPP argues that the host did not take appropriate action and instead laughed off the remark, adding to their frustration with the platform’s handling of the incident.

“We are left perplexed by Media General’s endgame,” Ahiagbah stated in the statement. Furthermore, TV3 political shows have been characterized by biased paneling, in which numerous individuals with known political affinities obviously support one party, putting a single NPP spokesperson at a disadvantage. This approach hinders genuine dialog and indicates a desire to offer a biased narrative.”

The NPP’s statement concluded by expressing hope that Media General would reconsider its approach, urging the media house to abandon its “activist stance” and work toward becoming a balanced platform that truly serves Ghanaians’ information needs, rather than attempting to influence public opinion in favor of one side.

This decision comes as tensions between Ghana’s political parties and media outlets continue to escalate, with concerns about media bias and the role of broadcasters in dictating political discourse. The NPP’s exit from Media General’s platforms marks a significant escalation in this ongoing battle.
