Four individuals sustained injuries, and over 70 households were displaced following a devastating rainstorm that hit Tepa Abonsuaso in the Ahafo Ano North Municipality of the Ashanti Region on Friday, January 24.
According to the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), the storm ripped off the roofs of over 20 buildings, including schools, leaving many residents homeless.
Frederick Nyamekye, the assembly member for the Abonsuaso electoral area, described the situation as dire. “As a result of the heavy rain that happened yesterday, a lot of people have lost the roofs of their buildings, and some sustained injuries, including children in schools,” he said.
Nyamekye added that he had already informed the NADMO coordinator about the disaster.
“We have toured the area to witness the situation. Though we currently do not have an MCE, we plan to notify the coordinating director in the town. We appeal to NGOs to come to our aid in addressing this sudden issue.”
Antwi Ernest, the NADMO Zonal Coordinator for Tepa Abonsuaso, stated that his team is actively assessing the damage and providing support to affected residents.
“Around 7:30 last night, a heavy downpour caused significant destruction, leaving many people in the town without roofing sheets. So far, four individuals have sustained injuries, 28 houses have been affected, and almost 70 people are homeless,” Antwi said.
Efforts are underway to provide relief to the affected residents as authorities assess the full extent of the damage.
