The Minister of Interior-designate, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntanka, has reaffirmed the government’s determination to eliminate excessive partisanship in the recruitment process for the security services in the country.
During his vetting on Friday, January 24, 2025, he pledged to ensure fairness in the recruitment process for personnel in security agencies if approved by Parliament.
“We need to do everything humanly possible to eliminate excessive partisanship in the recruitment process. These are issues we will look at, whether in the police service, prison service, national fire service, or all the other agencies,” he emphasised.
The Member of Parliament for Asawase also underscored the necessity of reviewing the selection processes for security service personnel.
“We’ll have to review, over the last 30 or 40 years, or since the start of this Fourth Republican Constitution, how we’ve done things. Has it served the purpose? If there are lapses, we’ll examine them and make necessary improvements for the country’s benefit,” he said.
He pointed out that recruitment into the security services remains a significant concern for many Ghanaians and called for an approach that meets high standards.
“Definitely, recruitment into the security services is a serious concern for the average Ghanaian, and it requires a review of the process. How do we do it so that it will meet the best standards? Remember, in ensuring these balances, I, as a minority, understand that if left unchecked, only the majority will benefit, and the minority may be sidelined,” he noted.
He also touched on the critical role of security services in safeguarding lives and maintaining peace.
“Remember, the security services are about protecting lives and maintaining peace. Their simple mandate is to preserve life, prevent crime, ensure law and order, and protect the average citizen in their daily activities.”
“So, I can assure you that with the expertise we have in the ministry, we will sit down and look at how best to improve this recruitment process. Even if we don’t perfect it, we will make it better than it is now,” he assured.
