Siemens, a global technology giant, is celebrating the successful integration of 950,000 smart meters on its advanced Meter Management System in Ghana. The solution is changing how electricity is managed in the
country and digitalizing the Electricity Company of Ghana with more than 4 million users.
Siemens was declared the winner of the ‘Best Company in Digital Transformation & Innovation’ at the Africa Best Business Awards held in Ghana, owing to the change it has brought in the digital outlook of the region.
This smart metering solution implemented at ECG will enable the utility to digitize everything from its backend operations right to the consumer interface for reliable and efficient electricity supply to over 3 million meters serving both houses and businesses.
“We are very proud of this feat and the award, which further illustrates Siemens’ leading role in transforming Ghana’s economy into a more effective digital ecosystem,” said Kofi Oppong, Siemens Regional Manager for
West Africa. “Our determination to digitalization, electrification, and automation is driving meaningful change in the region.”
Key Benefits of Siemens’ ECG Metering Management System
Oppong added, “The ECG Metering Management System has been a game-changer that has gotten rid of inefficiencies, ensured no more revenue collection issues, and heralded the inclusion of all Ghanaians into the benefits of digitalization. ”
Some of the customer service advantages introduced by the system include instant activation of electricity by users upon the purchase of tokens via Mobile Money wallets. This saves the consumers from having to rush
home, manually inputting these codes. It also allows relatives abroad to buy tokens, which may be in operation immediately. Such innovations in technology place the power into the users’ hands-the consumer hence has
more control over electricity consumption, reducing the danger of interruptions/service cuts or blacklisting for
non-payment of service, thereby significantly improving the customer experience. On the operational side, Siemens’ system unifies previously disconnected platforms, allowing for seamless communication across smart
meters from different manufacturers under one single backend. “Our solution ensures interoperability within the
utility’s framework, providing a fully digitalized ecosystem with a complete view of customer data,” Oppong said. This transparency brings better analytics, forecasting, network optimization, troubleshooting, and fraud detection.
Now in its fourth year of commercial operation, Siemens’ Grid Software Solution achieved impressive results,
including 950,000 smart meters integrated, improvement in revenue collection, customer satisfaction, and optimization of operation cost. Siemens is still providing the maintenance service to maintain the continuity of the success of the project.
It is through these technologies that Siemens will advance electricity management not only in Ghana but also in its wide perspective to transform the country digitally and serve as a model for other regions in Africa.
