ORAL is illegal, unconstitutional – Afenyo-Markin laments

The Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has criticised the establishment of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) committee, describing it as illegal and unconstitutional.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament during the debate to approve the first batch of vetted ministers on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, Afenyo-Markin argued that the formation of the ORAL committee bypasses established institutions and has warned that it could erode public confidence in governance.

The Member of Parliament of Effutu entreated the Attorney General and Minster of Justice-designate, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, to reassess the operations of the committee and ensure that existing state institutions are empowered to fulfill their mandates without undue interference.

“Mr. Speaker, that so-called ORAL committee claiming to be going after loot must be cautioned that that committee is unconstitutional and illegal. And I pray that my respected colleague, Dr. Dominic Ayine, after taking office, will review the activities of this illegal, unconstitutional body. Bring things to order and allow the state institutions clothed with the mandate to investigate, follow due process, and prosecute if necessary,” he stated.

The five-member ORAL team, established by President John Dramani Mahama has been tasked with investigating and documenting cases of alleged corruption and recovering misappropriated state resources.
