Dear GhanaWeb,
I’m a 27-year-old man who graduated from university two years ago. I have a girlfriend who has been incredibly supportive and loving. When I earned my degree, I shared with her my desire to pursue a career in my field of study and explained that I couldn’t work in any unrelated industry.
My girlfriend lives independently and is very hardworking. Finding a job in this country is challenging, so I am currently unemployed and still job hunting.
Things got so bad that I couldn’t afford my rent, and my landlord evicted me. I called my girlfriend, and she suggested I move in with her. I was both happy and emotional; I couldn’t believe how blessed I was to have such a loving and understanding partner.
She works every day except Sundays, leaving me home alone most of the time.
She has done everything a girlfriend could do to make her man happy. She buys me clothes, feeds me well, and pays all the bills in the house. I have assured her multiple times that I’ll take care of her as soon as I secure a good job.
Two months ago, I ran into an old friend, and we exchanged contacts. It had been years since we last saw each other, so we decided to catch up. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any money to plan the meet-up.
My girlfriend is naturally jealous, so I didn’t know how to tell her I needed money to see another woman. I lied to her, saying I needed money for transport and food to go job hunting. She sent me the money, and I met my friend.
Honestly, I didn’t plan to cheat on my girlfriend, but it just happened. During our meeting, my friend confessed that she had a long-time crush on me and had always wanted to be intimate with me. We were close back in the day, and she knew how to arouse me. She started seducing me, and I gave in.
We ended up having sex. Afterward, we continued talking, and I felt happy at the time.
Three days ago, she sent me a suggestive message, and my girlfriend saw our chats. The messages clearly showed I had been cheating. I tried to explain myself, but she wouldn’t listen.
She started shouting, accusing me of being a lazy cheat, and demanded that I pack my things and leave. She even went as far as shouting in front of our neighbors, telling them she fed and clothed me.
Her words humiliated me. I tried to calm her down and reason with her, but she kept yelling and calling me names. I couldn’t take it anymore. In a moment of anger, I punched her hard under her chin and neck, and she fell. I had never hit her before, but I lost control.
I immediately rushed her to the hospital. She has been unconscious for three days, and the doctors haven’t said much about her condition. They keep asking me what happened, but I don’t know what to say.
I’m terrified of what will happen if she wakes up and tells them I hit her. What if I get arrested? I didn’t mean to hurt her, but I don’t know if she’ll forgive me or protect me this time.
I don’t know what to do. Should I stay and face the consequences, or should I leave and let her family handle the situation? The problem is, I have nowhere to go if I leave. I feel so lost and disturbed.
What should I do?
