AngloGold Ashanti schools temporarily close amid security concerns in Obuasi

The management of AngloGold Ashanti Schools has announced the temporary closure of its institutions following escalating security concerns in Obuasi.

This decision comes in the wake of incidents involving the burning of vehicles and damage to private properties, which have raised alarm in the community.

In a notice dated Sunday, January 19, 2025, Simon Peter K. Attah-Cato, Executive Director of AngloGold Ashanti Schools, stated that the schools will remain closed on Monday, January 20, and Tuesday, January 21, 2025.

The measure, according to the statement, is aimed at safeguarding the lives and property of students, staff, parents, and other stakeholders.

“We are hopeful that calm will return to the town during this period, allowing us to reopen on Wednesday, January 23, 2025,” the notice read.

Management apologized for the inconvenience caused by the closure and appealed to parents and guardians for their understanding and cooperation during this period of heightened tension.

The decision reflects efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of the school community amidst ongoing unrest in the Obuasi area.

A violent confrontation between small-scale miners and military personnel stationed at the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Obuasi Mine has reportedly resulted in the deaths of some persons.

The clash, which took place last night in the Ashanti Region town of Obuasi, also saw four vehicles set ablaze, further escalating tensions in the area.
