According to Modern Ghana, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has become the center of political discourse after a striking announcement on his Facebook page. The newly elected independent Member of Parliament (MP) for Gomoa Central declared his readiness to join a political party in Parliament, but only under specific conditions.
In his post, A Plus challenged an undisclosed political party to undertake significant internal reforms. His primary demand is the resignation of three national executives from the party before he considers aligning himself with them. Although he refrained from naming the party, widespread speculation points to either the National Democratic Congress (NDC) or the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ghana’s dominant political groups.
This move comes against the backdrop of Ghana’s parliamentary protocols, which require independent MPs to associate with either the majority or minority caucus for effective legislative processes. With the NDC holding the majority and the NPP in the minority, A Plus’s decision has the potential to shift the balance of power in the 9th Parliament.
In an unexpected comedic twist, A Plus admitted he initially included an outlandish demand for an appointment as the Vice President of the United States but later withdrew it, opting to focus on the national officers’ resignation.
His post has stirred debates about political integrity and the role of independent MPs in driving accountability within Ghana’s governance structures. While A Plus has urged the party to act promptly and meet his demands, the likelihood of compliance remains uncertain.
The Ghanaian public is closely watching how this unfolds, as it could redefine the influence of independent voices within the nation’s political landscape.
