Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticized President Akufo-Addo’s recent commissioning of the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) new headquarters, describing it as a prime example of the government’s misplaced priorities as reported by MyNewsGH on Friday, November 22, 2024.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana, Gyamfi expressed his dismay over the event, questioning the appropriateness of unveiling an unfinished building.
“Akufo-Addo has reminded us again about the Bank of Ghana square, one of the misplaced priorities,” Gyamfi said, emphasizing that the inauguration of a structure that was still under construction was a misguided attempt to project progress.
“He went to commission an uncompleted building and expected us to clap for him,” he added, expressing his frustration with the president’s actions.
Gyamfi further criticized the decision to showcase a building still in progress, suggesting that it was an attempt to create the illusion of accomplishment amid the country’s financial struggles.
He linked the unveiling of the incomplete headquarters to the broader economic woes faced by many Ghanaians, pointing to the significant financial losses suffered by the BoG in recent years.
The NDC official highlighted the BoG’s losses, which amounted to GH₵60 billion in prior years, along with an additional GH₵10.5 billion loss last year.
He contrasted these figures with the performance of the Bank of Ghana during the tenure of former President John Mahama, stating that under Mahama’s leadership, the institution generated profits and invested in vital projects, including the “Bank hospital,” which many consider a vital resource.
Gyamfi also accused the Akufo-Addo administration of exacerbating Ghana’s economic difficulties by resorting to printing money to cover wasteful expenditures.
He stated that such actions were contributing to the country’s ongoing financial instability.
Despite these criticisms, President Akufo-Addo, during the commissioning of the BoG headquarters on November 20, 2024, defended the project.
In his speech, he praised the new facility, calling it a crucial step toward modernizing the country’s financial infrastructure.
“This new headquarters will serve as the new command center for the bank’s operations, fostering innovation, collaboration, and excellence in its service to the nation,” Akufo-Addo said.
The inauguration event was attended by numerous officials from both the government and the financial sector, who gathered to witness the unveiling of the ambitious project
